Friday was my last day at The Knoll. I spent many days in my last couple of weeks trying to remain present and really soak in the moments I will always cherish. This is such a special place, a school that makes you feel like family. It’s hard to believe how far I’ve come in such a short five years, but the impact WKE has made on me will not be forgotten. I have so much gratitude for those who helped me along the way, and for my students who taught me just as much as I hope to have taught them. As a third grader said to me during that last week of school, “Sometimes when you do something for a long time, you just want to find a new path in life.” Much love. It’s not a goodbye, it’s just a see you later! 💖🎨

Ps. Come visit me in Washington DC!

It’s the last day of school!! I ended with this final project for second and third grade artists.

We focused on the Japanese art of Gyotaku which translates to “fish rubbing”. Students learned about the history of this art style where artists used real fish. It was a way to document their catch before photography had been invented in the 1800s. We also discussed mixed media artworks. These young artists began with a seascape background using collage, crayon, and paint to make texture. Then, students used coffee filters as paper to mimic the traditional rice paper of this style for printing their own fish. (We used silicone fish and India ink). Finally, artists were to cut out their fish and add it to the seascapes they had created. 🐟🐚🪸

For their last artwork, fifth and fourth grade artists learned about Cubism as an art movement, the artist Pablo Picasso, and contemporary artist @cantrell_kimmy. Students spent several classes planning and drawing these cubist self portraits. They also planned what color scheme to use with collage as a medium. As this was our last project, some of the young artists had to finish with other materials and ended up with great mixed media pieces.

4K artists got to experiment with 3D material to make these mini seascapes. First we talked about what kinds of shapes different parts of a fish reminded us of, and then looked at other details like scales and a fish’s face. We used model magic (air dry clay) to form these fish and put them on a sturdy background. They could use straws and pencils to add texture or detail. Once dry, these budding artists used tempera paint to bring the fish and environments to life! 🐠

I am late posting today, but will be sharing pictures every day for the rest of the week to close out this school year.

First grade and kindergarten artists learned about @romerobritto to design these bright heart artworks. We reviewed lines and pattern, and discussed how Britto separates his artworks into parts. Then, the young artists used watercolor paint to fill their hearts, before finally adding a background with bleeding tissue paper. I love the different textures this created! 💖

4k students practiced the order of the color wheel with these artworks inspired by Picasso’s Petite Fleurs. There was also practice with tracing and erasing. 🌼

Then, we looked at paintings by Alma Thomas and thought about different shapes and colors. Students created their own collage similar to the style of her concentric circle artworks. They also added smaller details like lines and dots with construction paper crayons. 🟪🟨🟦

Notans are one of my favorite lessons to teach!

Fourth and fifth grade students started by creating a background using different watercolor techniques. They used a combination of wax resist, wet on wet painting, and added texture with salt. Then, we discussed notan art, the Japanese art style that plays with light & dark harmony (or balance). Students were introduced to positive and negative space, contrast, and symmetry. These young artists had to come up with designs to put on a small black paper, before cutting and gluing the mirrored pieces onto their watercolor background.

I’ll be on a posting marathon until the end of the school year. 8 more school days left!!

Kindergarten and first grade artists made these lovely mixed media flower vases. First they experimented with textures to make warm and cool color painted papers. Then, the young artists cut a vase shape and made a background with chalk pastels. We emphasized the importance of a horizontal line to give the impression that the vase was sitting on a table. Finally, students used the painted papers to cut and assemble flowers or plants coming out of their vases. 🌷

Second and third grade artists had so much fun concocting these cupcakes. Young artists made a pinch pot for the base, and used a coil method for the frosting. The cupcake could be one solid piece, or the young artists could leave separate pieces as a bowl and lid. Students could also add their own toppings. While waiting on the firing process, students drew a cupcake and planned their glaze colors. They could also add designs with the glaze if they were unable to during the build. Finally, bisqueware cupcakes were painted with glaze and fired once more for the final works you see here. 🧁🧡
